7 Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s electrical system. When it’s outdated or overloaded, you’ll usually see warning signs before anything serious happens. Here are seven of the most common signals that it’s time to call a licensed electrician about a panel upgrade.

1. Your breakers trip frequently

An occasional tripped breaker is normal. But if you’re walking to the panel every week to flip a breaker back on, your panel likely can’t keep up with your home’s electrical demand.

2. You still have a fuse box

Fuse boxes were standard decades ago, but most modern homes have outgrown them. If you’re still replacing fuses, upgrading to a modern breaker panel improves both safety and convenience.

3. You have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel

These brands are known to fail to trip properly, which is a genuine fire risk. If you have one, it’s worth having it evaluated and, in most cases, replaced.

4. Lights flicker or dim

If your lights dim when the AC kicks on or the microwave runs, your panel may be struggling to distribute power evenly.

5. You’re adding major appliances or an EV charger

Hot tubs, EV chargers, additions, and modern kitchens all draw significant power. Older 100-amp panels often need to be upgraded to 200-amp service to handle the load safely.

6. The panel is warm, buzzing, or smells burnt

Any heat, sound, or burning smell from your panel is a reason to call an electrician right away. These are signs of loose connections or overheating.

7. Your panel is 25+ years old

Even without obvious problems, panels have a lifespan. If yours is a few decades old, a professional inspection is a smart move.
